Short answer: the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Biology — the statewide standards. Wake County does not have its own separate biology standards.

The details

  • The standards are statewide. North Carolina adopted a new Standard Course of Study for Science in July 2023; the new Biology standards reached classrooms in 2024–25, the same year the redesigned state End-of-Course (EOC) Biology test was first given. That first administration deliberately did not count toward students' final grades — NCDPI needed the year's results to set cut scores first. The standing policy otherwise is that an EOC counts as at least 20% of the final course grade. Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS) teaches these state standards — a district can add pacing and materials, but not different standards.
  • The strands. Four of them, ten standards, twenty-seven objectives — all listed, with the pages here that teach each one, in NC_STANDARDS.md. They are organized around the major life-science strands: structures and processes of organisms (molecules to organisms), ecosystems and energy dynamics, heredity, and biological evolution. The seven course units in this library walk through exactly that territory: chemistry of life → cells → cellular processes → DNA and cell division → genetics and biotechnology → evolution → ecology.
  • "Honors" is depth, not different content. An Honors Biology section covers the same NC standards as standard Biology, at greater depth and pace, per the state's honors-level course framework. Both take the same EOC.
  • The EOC matters. Biology is one of North Carolina's EOC-tested courses — the state exam at the end of the year is written against these standards. The two-column (English | Polski) half of every page in this library is calibrated to that level.
  • AP Biology is a different, national framework. The AP Biology deep dive section at the bottom of each page follows the College Board's AP Biology Course and Exam Description (CED) — eight units that map loosely onto this course's seven (Unit 1 Chemistry of Life, Unit 2 Cell Structure and Function, Unit 3 Cellular Energetics, Unit 4 Cell Communication and Cell Cycle, Unit 5 Heredity, Unit 6 Gene Expression and Regulation, Unit 7 Natural Selection, Unit 8 Ecology). That content is beyond what the NC course requires — it is there for enrichment and as a head start if AP Biology comes later.
