| Definition. Deoxyribose is the five-carbon sugar found in every DNA nucleotide — it puts the "D" in DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). | Definicja. Deoksyryboza to pięciowęglowy cukier obecny w każdym nukleotydzie DNA — od niej pochodzi „D” w skrócie DNA (kwas deoksyrybonukleinowy). |
| The details. It is simply ribose missing one oxygen atom — that is what "deoxy-" means. In the DNA strand, deoxyribose alternates with phosphate groups to form the sugar-phosphate backbone (the sides of the ladder), and each sugar also holds one nitrogenous base (the rung). |
| Example. One DNA building block reads: phosphate – deoxyribose – base (A, T, G or C). Millions of these links in a row make one strand. | Przykład. Jedna cegiełka DNA to: fosforan – deoksyryboza – zasada (A, T, G lub C). Miliony takich ogniw ustawionych w rząd tworzą jedną nić. |
| Why it matters. The backbone is DNA's frame — it holds the bases in order like a spine holds pages. The missing oxygen makes DNA chemically tougher than RNA, which suits a molecule that must store information safely for a lifetime. | Dlaczego to ważne. |
| Common mistake. Deoxyribose is not the "energy sugar" — cells burn glucose, not deoxyribose; here the sugar's job is structural. And the difference from ribose is exactly one oxygen atom, nothing more. |
Po polsku — ujęcie podręcznikowe¶
Deoksyryboza to pentoza, czyli cukier pięciowęglowy, wchodząca w skład nukleotydów DNA.

AP Biology deep dive¶
Numbered carbons give DNA its directions. The sugar's carbons are numbered 1′ through 5′: the base attaches at 1′, the phosphate at 5′, and the hydroxyl at 3′. Nucleotides join by phosphodiester bonds between one sugar's 3′-OH and the next nucleotide's 5′-phosphate — so every strand has a 5′ end and a 3′ end, polymerases can only add to a free 3′-OH, and "5′→3′" talk in replication and transcription is really deoxyribose chemistry.
The missing oxygen is at carbon 2′. Ribose carries a 2′-OH; deoxyribose has only H there. That single hydroxyl makes RNA's backbone chemically reactive (it can attack its own phosphodiester bond), while DNA's backbone, lacking it, is far more resistant to hydrolysis. Long-term archive → DNA; short-lived working copies → RNA. This division of labor is one argument in the RNA world hypothesis: RNA came first, and DNA evolved as the more durable storage medium.
Where the cell gets it. Cells do not build deoxyribose from scratch — the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase removes the 2′-OH from ribonucleotides, converting RNA-style building blocks into DNA-style ones. Because this enzyme feeds DNA synthesis, it spikes before S phase and is a target of some chemotherapy drugs.
Where it sits in AP. Sugar and nucleotide structure is AP Unit 1 (Chemistry of Life); the 5′/3′ directionality it creates matters throughout Unit 6 (Gene Expression and Regulation).
