This unit follows a trait on its journey from parent to child. It starts with meiosis, the special division that shuffles chromosomes and deals them into gametes; then it uses Mendel's rules — and their extensions like codominance, multiple alleles, and sex linkage — to predict what the offspring of a cross will look like. Next come human genetic conditions, from cystic fibrosis to Down syndrome, and the tools that reveal them: the pedigree and the karyotype. The unit ends with the biotechnology toolbox — cutting, pasting, delivering, reading, and now editing DNA — and the ethical questions that come with it. The storyline: meiosis halves and shuffles the chromosome deck → fertilization joins two half-decks into a unique zygote → Mendel's ratios predict the hand each child is dealt → real life adds the exceptions (blood groups, pink flowers, color-blind boys, many-gene traits) → and biotechnology turns the whole story into tools: insulin-making bacteria, DNA fingerprints, CRISPR — plus the question "just because we can, should we?" This unit maps onto AP Biology Unit 5 (Heredity) — meiosis and its two built-in shuffles (crossing over, independent assortment), Mendelian ratios and probability rules, the non-Mendelian extensions (codominance, multiple alleles, sex linkage, polygenic traits), and chromosomal inheritance including nondisjunction disorders — while the biotech toolbox (restriction enzymes, recombinant DNA, bacterial transformation, gel electrophoresis) is Topic 6.8 of AP Unit 6 (Gene Expression and Regulation), where CRISPR and gene therapy also sit as applications of gene expression; sickle cell's heterozygote advantage additionally reaches into Unit 7 (Natural Selection).
