Independent Assortment / Niezależna segregacja chromosomów

← Unit 5 · Genetics and Biotechnology

English Polski
Definition. Independent assortment is Mendel's second law: which allele a gamete gets for one gene does not influence which allele it gets for another (as long as the genes ride on different chromosomes). Each chromosome pair is dealt into gametes independently, like separate coin flips. Definicja.
How it works. The mechanism is pure geometry at metaphase I of meiosis: every homologous pair lines up on the cell's equator, and each pair chooses on its own which side faces which pole — mom-chromosome left or right, at random. With 23 pairs that is 23 independent coin flips, giving 2²³ ≈ 8,4 million possible chromosome combinations per gamete.
Example. A pea plant YyRr (yellow, round seeds — genes on different chromosomes) makes four gamete types in equal numbers: YR, Yr, yR, yr. Crossed with another YyRr, the offspring show Mendel's famous 9:3:3:1 ratio — 9 yellow-round : 3 yellow-wrinkled : 3 green-round : 1 green-wrinkled — which only works because Y and R travel independently. Przykład. Groch YyRr (nasiona żółte, gładkie — geny na różnych chromosomach) wytwarza cztery typy gamet w równych ilościach: YR, Yr, yR, yr. Skrzyżowany z innym YyRr daje potomstwo w słynnym stosunku 9:3:3:1 — 9 żółtych gładkich : 3 żółte pomarszczone : 3 zielone gładkie : 1 zielone pomarszczone — a działa to tylko dlatego, że Y i R podróżują niezależnie.
Why it matters. Independent assortment is the biggest single generator of gamete variety — millions of combinations before crossing over even enters. It is also the licence behind every two-gene Punnett square and behind multiplying probabilities: P(child is aa and bb) = P(aa) × P(bb) only because the genes assort independently. Dlaczego to ważne. Niezależna segregacja to największy pojedynczy generator różnorodności gamet — miliony kombinacji, zanim w ogóle wkroczy crossing-over. To także „licencja” każdej krzyżówki dwugenowej i mnożenia prawdopodobieństw: P(dziecko aa i bb) = P(aa) × P(bb) tylko dlatego, że geny segregują niezależnie.
Common mistake. The law has small print: genes sitting close together on the same chromosome (linked genes) do not assort independently — they tend to travel as a package, reshuffled only by crossing over. Mendel's seven pea traits happened to behave; your two chosen genes might not. Also: the assortment happens between homologous pairs in meiosis I — not between sister chromatids.

AP Biology deep dive

Geometry → algebra. Random bivalent orientation at metaphase I makes maternal/paternal choice per pair a Bernoulli trial; n pairs give 2ⁿ gamete classes. The 9:3:3:1 is just (3:1)×(3:1) — the product rule in phenotype form — and AP's efficient method for any multi-gene cross is to multiply per-locus fractions rather than draw 16-cell squares: e.g., P(AaBbCc × AaBbCc → A_bbCc) = ¾ × ¼ × ½. Chi-square then tests observed dihybrid counts against the 9:3:3:1 expectation, with deviations pointing at linkage, epistasis, or lethality.

The linkage exception built modern genetics. Morgan's fly crosses gave parental-class excesses instead of independence; the recombinant fraction became a distance, and Sturtevant's mapping turned exceptions to Mendel's second law into the first chromosome maps. The modern statement of the law is therefore conditional: loci on different chromosomes, or far apart on one chromosome (recombination frequency → 50%), assort independently.

Assortment beyond textbooks. Interchromosomal assortment reshuffles whole-chromosome haplotypes each generation — with crossing over and random fertilization it makes sibling genomes ~50% identical on average but never in the same blocks; genetic ancestry segments and why you can inherit "more DNA" from one grandparent than another follow directly. Aneuploidy screens also lean on the same metaphase-I event: what orients independently can also mis-segregate independently.

Where it sits in AP. Independent assortment is Topics 5.1–5.3 of AP Unit 5 (Heredity) — meiotic mechanism plus Mendelian math — with linkage and mapping as Topic 5.4's refinement.
