Gametes (Sex Cells) / Gamety (komórki płciowe)¶

| Definition. Gametes are the sex cells — sperm in males, eggs in females. They are haploid (n): each carries only one chromosome from every pair, 23 in humans, so that two gametes together rebuild the full set of 46. | Definicja. Gamety to komórki płciowe — plemniki u samców i komórki jajowe u samic. |
| The details. Gametes are made by meiosis, which halves the chromosome number and shuffles alleles, so no two gametes from one person are genetically identical. Form follows job: a sperm is a stripped-down swimmer — a DNA package with a tail and mitochondria for fuel; an egg is large and stationary, stocked with nutrients for the embryo's first days. In genetics problems, a gamete carries exactly one allele of each gene — that is Mendel's law of segregation in action. W zadaniach genetycznych gameta niesie dokładnie jeden allel każdego genu — to prawo czystości gamet Mendla w praktyce. |
| Example. A plant with genotype Bb makes two kinds of gametes — half carrying B, half carrying b. That is exactly what you write along the edges of a Punnett square. In humans, every egg carries an X chromosome, while a sperm carries either an X or a Y — which is why the sperm decides the baby's sex. | Przykład. Roślina o genotypie Bb wytwarza dwa rodzaje gamet — połowę z allelem B, połowę z b. Dokładnie to wpisujesz na brzegach szachownicy Punnetta. U człowieka każda komórka jajowa niesie chromosom X, a plemnik — X albo Y, dlatego to plemnik decyduje o płci dziecka. |
| Why it matters. Gametes are the only bridge between generations: whatever alleles your children inherit from you must ride in one sperm or one egg. Halving (meiosis) plus re-joining (fertilization) keeps the chromosome number stable across generations while making every offspring a fresh combination. | Dlaczego to ważne. Gamety to jedyny pomost między pokoleniami: każdy allel, jaki Twoje dziecko po Tobie odziedziczy, musi przejechać w jednym plemniku albo jednej komórce jajowej. Zmniejszenie o połowę (mejoza) plus ponowne złożenie (zapłodnienie) utrzymuje stałą liczbę chromosomów z pokolenia na pokolenie, a zarazem czyni każde potomstwo świeżą kombinacją. |
| Common mistake. Gametes are made by meiosis, not mitosis — and a gamete's 23 chromosomes are not "the mom half" or "the dad half" as a block: each of the 23 was picked independently, a shuffled mix of grandma's and grandpa's chromosomes (further mixed by crossing over).

AP Biology deep dive¶
Gametogenesis asymmetry. Spermatogenesis is continuous, symmetric, and prolific (four sperm per meiosis, ~100 million/day from puberty on); oogenesis is front-loaded and asymmetric — oocytes enter meiosis before birth, arrest in prophase I for decades, and each meiosis yields one egg plus polar bodies because cytokinesis is deliberately unequal, hoarding cytoplasm, organelles, and stored mRNAs for early development. Two exam-relevant consequences: the decades-long prophase I arrest underlies the maternal-age effect on nondisjunction, and the egg's cytoplasmic monopoly explains maternal inheritance of mitochondria.
One allele per gamete — usually. The law of segregation is the physical separation of homologs at anaphase I; a gamete carrying both alleles of a gene is the signature of nondisjunction (or, for linked genes, an intact parental chromosome). Heterozygote Aa ⇒ ½ A gametes, ½ a gametes is the assumption every Punnett square and every chi-square test of offspring ratios rests on; distorted ratios (segregation distorters, lethal alleles) are the interesting exceptions.
Alternation of generations perspective. In animals, gametes are the only haploid cells and arise directly by meiosis. In plants, meiosis makes spores, which grow into a multicellular haploid gametophyte that only then produces gametes by mitosis — a distinction AP uses to test whether you know meiosis makes "haploid cells", not necessarily "gametes".
Where it sits in AP. Gamete formation and its contribution to variation are Topics 5.1–5.2 of AP Unit 5 (Heredity); mitochondrial (non-nuclear) inheritance is called out in Topic 5.4.
