| Definition. Autosomes are all the chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs: 22 pairs of autosomes plus one pair of sex chromosomes (XX or XY). | Definicja. |
| The details. Autosomes come in homologous pairs — one from mom, one from dad — numbered 1 to 22 roughly from largest to smallest. Both members of a pair carry the same genes at the same places, though possibly different alleles. Everyone, male or female, has the same set of autosomes, so autosomal genes behave the same in both sexes. | Szczegóły. Autosomy występują w parach homologicznych — jeden od mamy, drugi od taty — ponumerowanych od 1 do 22, w przybliżeniu od największego do najmniejszego. Oba chromosomy pary niosą te same geny w tych samych miejscach, choć niekoniecznie te same allele. |
| Example. The CFTR gene (cystic fibrosis) sits on chromosome 7 and the huntingtin gene on chromosome 4 — both autosomes. That is why cystic fibrosis and Huntington's disease strike boys and girls equally often, unlike X-linked color blindness. | Przykład. Gen CFTR (mukowiscydoza) leży na chromosomie 7, a gen huntingtyny na chromosomie 4 — oba to autosomy. Dlatego mukowiscydoza i choroba Huntingtona dotykają chłopców i dziewczynki równie często, w przeciwieństwie do sprzężonego z chromosomem X daltonizmu. |
| Why it matters. "Autosomal" is half of every inheritance label you will meet: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked. Knowing a gene is autosomal tells you sex does not matter for the trait — a key first step when you read a pedigree. | Dlaczego to ważne. |
| Common mistake. Autosomes are not "unimportant" or "non-genetic" chromosomes — they carry the overwhelming majority of your genes. The only thing they do not do is determine sex.

AP Biology deep dive¶
Why the distinction matters formally. Autosomal loci come in two copies in every individual, so genotype frequencies follow the standard Hardy–Weinberg expansion and reciprocal crosses give identical results. X-linked loci break that symmetry — males are hemizygous — which is exactly the diagnostic AP uses: if a trait's frequency or a cross's outcome differs by sex, think X linkage; if not, autosomal is the default hypothesis.
Pedigree logic. Autosomal dominant: affected individuals in every generation, either sex, affected child ⇒ affected parent (barring new mutation). Autosomal recessive: can skip generations, unaffected carrier parents can have affected children (the classic aa child of two Aa parents), both sexes equally. These rules are the workhorse of AP pedigree questions, with X-linked patterns as the contrast case.
Chromosome behavior. Autosomes pair and segregate in meiosis exactly as the chromosome theory of inheritance requires — Sutton and Boveri's insight that Mendel's "factors" ride on chromosomes. Autosomal aneuploidies are almost always lethal in humans; trisomy 21 is the major viable exception, which is why Down syndrome dominates the discussion of autosomal nondisjunction.
Where it sits in AP. The autosome/sex-chromosome distinction runs through AP Unit 5 (Heredity) — Mendelian ratios (5.3), non-Mendelian and sex-linked inheritance (5.4), and chromosomal inheritance (5.6).
