Placenta / Łożysko

English Polski
Definition. The placenta is a temporary organ built during pregnancy from both the embryo's membranes and the mother's uterine lining. It is the exchange interface: nutrients and oxygen flow to the fetus, wastes and carbon dioxide flow back to the mother. Definicja. Łożysko to przejściowy narząd powstający w ciąży z tkanek obu stron: błon płodowych zarodka i błony śluzowej macicy matki. Działa jak węzeł wymiany: składniki odżywcze i tlen płyną do płodu, a zbędne produkty przemiany materii i dwutlenek węgla — z powrotem do matki.
The details. The fetus connects to the placenta through the umbilical cord. Crucially, the two bloodstreams never mix — exchange happens across thin membrane barriers, like goods passed through a customs window. The placenta also works as a gland, producing pregnancy hormones, and as a partial filter — though alcohol, nicotine, some drugs, and some pathogens do cross.
Example. Human pregnancy runs about nine months on one placenta, delivered after the baby as the afterbirth. Deer, whales, and mice — placental mammals all. The contrast group: marsupials (kangaroos) give birth to embryo-like young that finish developing in the pouch, and monotremes (platypus, echidna) lay eggs. Jeleń, wieloryb i mysz — wszystko to ssaki łożyskowe. Grupa kontrastowa: torbacze (kangury) rodzą młode na etapie niemal zarodka, które kończą rozwój w torbie, a stekowce (dziobak, kolczatka) składają jaja.
Why it matters. The placenta lets a mammal develop its young inside its own body for months — protected, warmed, and continuously fed — so offspring are born far more developed than anything hatched from an egg of similar size. It defines the placental mammals, the group that includes us, and represents the extreme "quality over quantity" strategy of reproduction. Dlaczego to ważne. Łożysko pozwala ssakowi rozwijać młode wewnątrz własnego ciała przez wiele miesięcy — chronione, ogrzewane i nieprzerwanie odżywiane — więc potomstwo rodzi się znacznie bardziej rozwinięte niż cokolwiek wyklutego z jaja podobnej wielkości. Definiuje ssaki łożyskowe, grupę obejmującą także nas, i stanowi skrajną strategię rozrodu „jakość ponad ilość”.
Common mistake. Mother's and baby's blood do not mix — if they did, mismatched blood groups would trigger immune attack in most pregnancies; exchange is across membranes only. And "mammal" does not equal "placental": monotremes lay eggs and marsupials rely mostly on the pouch — the placenta defines one branch of mammals, not the whole class.

AP Biology deep dive

An organ built from the amniote membrane kit. The eutherian placenta is a remodeling job, not an invention from scratch: the chorion (with allantoic vessels) forms the fetal side, so the same membranes that manage gas and waste inside a reptile egg were redeployed for direct maternal exchange — homology carried across a major life-history transition. Exchange efficiency comes from surface area (villi) and countercurrent-like flow arrangements, the same design principles AP highlights in gills and kidneys.

Viviparity and placentas evolved many times. Placenta-like structures appear convergently in some sharks (yolk-sac placentas), in many lizard and snake lineages, and even in seahorse male brood pouches — dozens of independent origins of matrotrophy. Comparing them isolates the selective drivers (cold climates, egg predation, parental control over provisioning) and provides a ready-made convergent-evolution example that is not the usual wings-and-eyes.

Genomic curiosities AP can reach. Syncytin genes — essential for fusing placental cells into the syncytiotrophoblast layer — are domesticated retroviral envelope genes, captured independently in several mammal lineages: horizontal acquisition put to work. The placenta is also an immunological negotiation (a half-foreign tissue tolerated for months) and a battleground of genomic imprinting, where paternally expressed genes push fetal growth and maternally expressed genes restrain it — parent-offspring conflict written in gene regulation.

Where it sits in AP. Reproductive strategy and parental investment in AP Unit 8 (Ecology); convergence and homology arguments in Unit 7 (Natural Selection), with imprinting touching Unit 6 (Gene Expression and Regulation).
