| Definition. Courtship is the set of ritual behaviors — displays, songs, dances, gifts — that animals perform before mating, usually to attract a partner and prove they are a healthy member of the right species. | Definicja. Zaloty to zestaw rytualnych zachowań — pokazów, pieśni, tańców, podarunków — wykonywanych przed rozrodem, zwykle po to, by przyciągnąć partnera i udowodnić, że jest się zdrowym przedstawicielem właściwego gatunku. |
| How it works. Typically one sex (often the male) advertises and the other (often the female) chooses — she invests more in each offspring, so she is the pickier shopper. The signals are species-specific: the pattern of a firefly's flashes or a frog's call works like a password, so females do not waste eggs on the wrong species. Choosing showy, vigorous males is sexual selection in action. | Jak działa. Zazwyczaj jedna płeć (często samiec) się reklamuje, a druga (często samica) wybiera — to ona inwestuje więcej w każde młode, więc wybiera staranniej. Wybieranie efektownych, pełnych wigoru samców to dobór płciowy w akcji. |
| Example. A peacock spreads a huge, heavy train of feathers; peahens prefer the most impressive ones. Male fireflies flash a species-specific code, cranes dance in pairs, bowerbirds build and decorate display structures, and some male insects offer food gifts. | Przykład. Paw rozkłada ogromny, ciężki tren z piór, a pawice wybierają najbardziej okazałe. |
| Why it matters. Courtship shows that reproduction, not just survival, drives evolution: a trait that shortens life can still spread if it wins enough mates. It also keeps species separate — mismatched courtship signals are one of the main barriers that prevent hybrid matings. | Dlaczego to ważne. Utrzymują też odrębność gatunków — niedopasowane sygnały godowe to jedna z głównych barier zapobiegających krzyżówkom międzygatunkowym. |
| Common mistake. "Useless and risky, so evolution should remove it" — wrong measuring stick. The peacock's train hurts survival but boosts reproduction, and fitness is counted in offspring. A short, flashy, well-mated life can out-evolve a long, drab, mateless one. | Częsty błąd. „Bezużyteczne i ryzykowne, więc ewolucja powinna to usunąć” — to zła miarka. |
Po polsku — ujęcie podręcznikowe¶
W polskiej terminologii zaloty należą do zachowań godowych (rozrodczych) i mają bogate słownictwo własne: u ptaków leśnych mówi się o tokach i tokowaniu (głuszec, cietrzew), u jeleni o rykowisku, u ryb o tarle, a ogólnie o godach.

AP Biology deep dive¶
Two arenas of sexual selection. Intersexual selection is mate choice (peahens judging trains); intrasexual selection is same-sex competition (elk locking antlers, elephant seals fighting for beaches). Both produce sexual dimorphism — ornaments and weapons concentrated in the competing sex — and both can drive traits past the survival optimum, because the currency is matings, not lifespan.
Why believe the ad? Honest signaling. Ornaments persist as signals because they are hard to fake: only a healthy, well-fed, parasite-light male can afford a perfect train or a long song (the handicap principle). Some versions are directly condition-dependent — carotenoid-based reds and oranges use pigments that also serve immune function, so color literally spends health. Runaway (Fisherian) selection is the alternative model: preference and trait genes become correlated and amplify each other until survival costs call a halt.
Courtship as a prezygotic barrier. Species-specific signals make behavioral isolation one of the strongest prezygotic reproductive barriers: eastern and western meadowlarks overlap in range and look nearly identical, but their songs differ and females answer only their own. When closely related species meet, selection can sharpen signal differences further (reinforcement) — courtship divergence both marks and makes new species.
Where it sits in AP. Sexual selection and reproductive isolation are AP Unit 7 (Natural Selection); courtship as communication behavior sits in Unit 8 (Ecology).
