Homozygous / Homozygota

← Unit 5 · Genetics and Biotechnology

English Polski
Definition. An organism is homozygous for a gene when its two alleles of that gene are identical — either BB (homozygous dominant) or bb (homozygous recessive). "Homo-" = the same. Definicja. „Homo-” = taki sam.
The details. A homozygote can only pass on one kind of allele: every gamete of a BB plant carries B, every gamete of bb carries b. That makes homozygotes true-breeding — crossed with their own kind, they give uniform offspring, generation after generation. Mendel's starting lines were true-breeding for exactly this reason, and it is only in the recessive homozygote (bb) that a recessive trait finally becomes visible.
Example. A blue-eyed person is homozygous bb for the main eye-color gene — blue can show only with no B around. Crossed BB × bb, all offspring are Bb (uniform — Mendel's F₁); and in a carrier × carrier cross (Cc × Cc for cystic fibrosis), the affected child is the homozygote cc. Z krzyżówki BB × bb całe potomstwo to Bb (jednolite — pokolenie F₁ Mendla); a w krzyżówce nosiciel × nosiciel (Cc × Cc dla mukowiscydozy) chore dziecko to homozygota cc.
Why it matters. Homozygotes anchor genetic reasoning: true-breeding lines let you set up clean crosses, the recessive homozygote is the give-away phenotype that reveals hidden alleles (that is why test crosses use bb), and in medicine "homozygous for the mutation" is what turns carrier status into disease. Dlaczego to ważne. Homozygoty kotwiczą rozumowanie genetyczne: czyste linie pozwalają układać przejrzyste krzyżówki, homozygota recesywna to fenotyp-zdrajca ujawniający ukryte allele (dlatego krzyżówka testowa używa bb), a w medycynie „homozygotyczność mutacji” zamienia nosicielstwo w chorobę.
Common mistake. "Homozygous" does not mean "healthy" or "normal" — BB and bb are both homozygous, and for a dominant disorder like Huntington's the healthy genotype is the recessive homozygote hh. The word says only that the two alleles match, nothing about which allele it is.

AP Biology deep dive

Homozygosity by descent. Inbreeding raises homozygosity not by changing allele frequencies but by pairing alleles that are identical because they descend from one recent ancestor — quantified by the inbreeding coefficient F, which inflates homozygote classes at heterozygotes' expense (genotypes p²+Fpq, 2pq(1−F), q²+Fpq). That is the algebra behind inbreeding depression: rare deleterious recessives suddenly meet themselves. Small populations drift the same direction, which is why conservation genetics tracks heterozygosity as a vital sign.

True-breeding as experimental design. Mendel's P-generation lines had to be homozygous for the logic to work: only then does F₁ uniformity demonstrate dominance, and F₂'s 3:1 demonstrate segregation. Modern lab strains repeat the trick — inbred mouse lines are near-totally homozygous, making genotype a controlled variable; the cost is the same as in conservation, fixed recessive quirks per strain.

Molecular readouts. Runs of homozygosity in genome data reveal recent inbreeding or founder events; homozygosity mapping locates recessive-disease genes in consanguineous families (the affected child is homozygous-by-descent across the causal region). For selection, dominance matters: a recessive lethal is invisible in Aa, so q declines only as q² — slowly — whereas a dominant lethal is exposed in every carrier and vanishes in one generation unless late-acting.

Where it sits in AP. Homozygous genotypes are the currency of Topics 5.3–5.6 in AP Unit 5 (Heredity); inbreeding, drift, and small-population effects belong to Unit 7 (Natural Selection).
