Ecology is the study of who lives with whom — and on whom. This unit follows the energy: from producers through consumers to decomposers, up the trophic levels where 90% is lost at every step. Then it watches populations grow — the explosive J-curve, the braked S-curve, and the carrying capacity where limiting factors call the stop. Next come the ways species live together: predator and prey, and the symbiosis family from win–win to freeloading to theft. It ends with the biggest consumer of all: humans — acid rain, dead zones, invasive species, the ozone story, and the carbon arithmetic of climate change. Ekologia bada, kto z kim żyje — i czyim kosztem. Ten dział podąża za energią: od producentów przez konsumentów po destruentów, w górę poziomów troficznych, gdzie na każdym szczeblu przepada 90%. Potem patrzy, jak rosną populacje — wybuchowa krzywa J, przyhamowana krzywa S i pojemność środowiska, przy której stop ogłaszają czynniki ograniczające. Dalej sposoby współżycia gatunków: drapieżnik i ofiara oraz rodzina symbioz — od obopólnej korzyści przez jazdę na gapę po kradzież. Na końcu największy konsument ze wszystkich: człowiek — kwaśne deszcze, martwe strefy, gatunki inwazyjne, historia ozonu i węglowa arytmetyka zmiany klimatu.
The storyline: energy flows one way (matter cycles) → populations grow until something stops them → species interactions knit populations into communities → and one species, ours, now bends every one of those rules at planetary scale. Oś działu: energia płynie w jedną stronę (materia krąży) → populacje rosną, aż coś je zatrzyma → oddziaływania międzygatunkowe splatają populacje w biocenozy → a jeden gatunek, nasz, nagina dziś każdą z tych reguł w skali planety.

Climate Change zmiana klimatu The human-driven warming of Earth's long-term averages.
Commensalism komensalizm One species benefits, the other neither gains nor loses (+/0).
Community biocenoza All the interacting populations of different species in one area.
Consumer konsument An organism that gets energy by eating others.
Decomposer destruent (reducent) Bacteria and fungi that break the dead back down to minerals.
Eutrophication eutrofizacja Over-fertilized water: bloom, die-off, oxygen crash, dead zone.
Exponential Growth (J-curve) wzrost wykładniczy (krzywa J) Growth that speeds up as the population grows — doubling without limits.
Fossil Fuels paliwa kopalne Coal, oil, and gas — ancient buried carbon we burn in decades.
Greenhouse Gases gazy cieplarniane Gases that trap Earth's outgoing heat — CO₂, methane, N₂O, and friends.
Invasive Species gatunek inwazyjny A non-native that spreads aggressively and causes harm.
Limiting Factor czynnik ograniczający The scarcest resource or condition — the one that caps growth.
Logistic Growth (S-curve) wzrost logistyczny (krzywa S) Growth that slows as resources tighten and levels off at K.
Mitigation łagodzenie zmian klimatu (mitygacja) Cutting emissions and protecting sinks — attacking climate change at its cause.
Mutualism mutualizm A relationship where both species benefit (+/+).
Niche nisza ekologiczna A species' full way of making a living — its role, not its address.
Nitrogen Fixation wiązanie azotu Bacteria turning inert N₂ gas into nitrogen life can use.
Non-Native Species gatunek obcy A species humans moved outside its natural range — harmful or not.
Parasitism pasożytnictwo One species feeds on a living host at its expense (+/−).
Population populacja All individuals of one species in one area at one time.
Predator drapieżnik The hunter that catches, kills, and eats its prey.
Prey ofiara The hunted — armed with camouflage, mimicry, and safety in numbers.
Producer producent An organism that makes its own food — the base of every food chain.
Symbiosis symbioza Close, long-term living-together of different species — the umbrella term.
Trophic Levels poziomy troficzne The feeding floors of an ecosystem, each passing on only ~10% of its energy.

AP Biology connection

This unit maps directly onto AP Biology Unit 8 (Ecology): energy flow through ecosystems and the 10% rule (Topic 8.2), population ecology with the exponential and logistic models (Topics 8.3–8.4), community interactions from competition to symbiosis (Topic 8.5), biodiversity (Topic 8.6), and human disruptions — eutrophication, invasive species, ozone depletion, and climate change (Topic 8.7).
