Unit 3 — Cellular Processes / Procesy komórkowe¶
← All units / Wszystkie działy
| English | Polski |
|---|---|
| Every cell is a busy border town: substances stream in and out across the membrane all day, and energy is captured, converted, and spent to keep it all running. This unit first follows the traffic — solutions, diffusion, osmosis, and the passive and active transport that move materials across a selectively permeable membrane — and then follows the energy: how photosynthesis stores the sun's energy in glucose, how cellular respiration and fermentation cash that energy out, and how ATP delivers it to every job in the cell. |
| The storyline: solutions and gradients → transport that costs nothing (diffusion, osmosis) → transport the cell pays for (pumps and vesicles) → what water movement does to cells (tonicity, turgor, plasmolysis) → capturing energy (photosynthesis, chemosynthesis) → spending it (respiration, fermentation), with ATP as the currency that ties it all together. | Oś działu: roztwory i gradienty → transport, który nic nie kosztuje (dyfuzja, osmoza) → transport na koszt komórki (pompy i pęcherzyki) → skutki ruchu wody (roztwory hiper-, hipo- i izotoniczne, turgor, plazmoliza) → pozyskiwanie energii (fotosynteza, chemosynteza) → jej wydawanie (oddychanie, fermentacja), a wszystko spina ATP — energetyczna waluta komórki. |

| Alcoholic Fermentation | fermentacja alkoholowa | Yeast's no-oxygen backup: glucose → ethanol + CO₂. |
| Anaerobic Respiration | oddychanie beztlenowe | Releasing energy without oxygen — fast, but only 2 ATP per glucose. |
| ATP | ATP (adenozynotrifosforan) | The cell's rechargeable energy currency. |
| Autotroph | organizm samożywny (autotrof) | An organism that makes its own food — a producer. |
| Cellular Respiration | oddychanie komórkowe | How cells turn food into ATP; the mirror of photosynthesis. |
| Chemosynthesis | chemosynteza | Making food with chemical energy instead of light. |
| Chlorophyll | chlorofil | The green pigment that captures light for photosynthesis. |
| Concentration Gradient | gradient stężeń | A difference in concentration between two areas — transport's driving force. |
| Diffusion | dyfuzja | Particles spreading from high to low concentration, for free. |
| Dynamic Equilibrium | równowaga dynamiczna | Concentrations even out, particles keep moving — no net change. |
| Endocytosis | endocytoza | The membrane wraps around material and pulls it into the cell. |
| Exocytosis | egzocytoza | A vesicle fuses with the membrane and releases its cargo outside. |
| Facilitated Diffusion | dyfuzja ułatwiona | Passive transport through a helper protein — still no ATP. |
| Heterotroph | organizm cudzożywny (heterotrof) | An organism that must eat — a consumer or decomposer. |
| Hypertonic | roztwór hipertoniczny | The more concentrated solution — water leaves a cell placed in it. |
| Hypotonic | roztwór hipotoniczny | The more dilute solution — water enters a cell placed in it. |
| Isotonic | roztwór izotoniczny | Equal concentrations — no net water movement. |
| Lactic Acid Fermentation | fermentacja mlekowa | The no-oxygen backup in hard-working muscles and yogurt bacteria. |
| Light (Radiant) Energy | energia świetlna | The sun's radiant energy that powers photosynthesis. |
| Osmosis | osmoza | Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. |
| Passive Transport | transport bierny | Any membrane crossing that costs the cell no energy. |
| Photosynthesis | fotosynteza | Producers turn CO₂ + water + light into glucose + O₂. |
| Plasmolysis | plazmoliza | A plant cell's membrane pulls away from the wall as water leaves. |

AP Biology connection¶
The membrane half of this unit is AP Unit 2 (Cell Structure and Function) — membrane structure and selective permeability, passive, active, and bulk transport, and tonicity with the water-potential model (ψ = ψs + ψp) in Topic 2.8. The energy half is AP Unit 3 (Cellular Energetics): ATP and energy coupling (Topic 3.4), the light reactions and Calvin cycle of photosynthesis (3.5), and glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and fermentation (3.6). Autotroph, heterotroph, and chemosynthesis reach forward into Unit 8 (Ecology), where energy flow through producers and consumers begins. The deep-dive section at the bottom of each term page goes there.
