| Definition. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is the RNA that — together with proteins — builds the ribosome itself, the machine that assembles proteins. | Definicja. Rybosomowy RNA, w skrócie rRNA, to RNA, który — razem z białkami — buduje sam rybosom, maszynę składającą białka. |
| The details. A ribosome consists of a large subunit and a small subunit, each a mix of rRNA and protein. The small subunit holds and reads the mRNA; the large subunit joins the amino acids — and the joining is actually done by the rRNA. rRNA is the most abundant RNA in the cell (about 80% of the total), and it is never translated into anything: the RNA itself is the gene's final product. | Szczegóły. Rybosom składa się z podjednostki dużej i małej, a każda z nich to mieszanina rRNA i białek. Podjednostka mała trzyma i odczytuje mRNA; duża łączy aminokwasy — i to łączenie wykonuje w istocie rRNA. rRNA to najliczniejszy RNA komórki (około 80% całości) i nigdy nie jest na nic tłumaczony: sam RNA jest końcowym produktem genu. |
| Example. A cell that exports lots of protein — like an insulin-making pancreas cell — keeps millions of ribosomes busy at once. In eukaryotic cells the rRNA is produced in the nucleolus, the dark spot visible inside the nucleus. | Przykład. Komórka produkująca dużo białka na eksport — jak komórka trzustki wytwarzająca insulinę — zatrudnia naraz miliony rybosomów. W komórkach eukariotycznych rRNA powstaje w jąderku, ciemnej plamce widocznej wewnątrz jądra. |
| Why it matters. No rRNA → no ribosomes → no proteins → no life; every organism on Earth runs on ribosomes. The differences between bacterial and human ribosomes are also medicine's friend: several antibiotics jam bacterial rRNA while leaving ours untouched. | Dlaczego to ważne. |
| Common mistake. rRNA does not carry a genetic message and does not deliver amino acids — those are mRNA's and tRNA's jobs; rRNA is the machine part. And note that a gene's product can be RNA: rRNA genes are transcribed but never translated.

AP Biology deep dive¶
The ribosome is a ribozyme. Structural work on the large subunit showed that the peptidyl transferase center — the active site that forms peptide bonds — is built entirely of rRNA; the proteins sit on the outside as scaffolding. Protein synthesis is therefore catalyzed by RNA, the strongest single piece of evidence for the RNA world hypothesis: an RNA machine making proteins looks like a fossil from an era before protein enzymes existed. The small subunit's rRNA does the other critical job, monitoring codon–anticodon geometry in the A site.
70S vs 80S, and why it matters twice. Bacterial ribosomes (70S: 30S + 50S subunits) differ enough from eukaryotic ones (80S: 40S + 60S) that antibiotics — streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin — can poison bacterial translation selectively. The same comparison cuts evolutionary: mitochondria and chloroplasts carry their own 70S-style ribosomes, a core line of evidence for endosymbiosis. Ribosome similarity across all life, meanwhile, argues for universal common ancestry.
A molecular clock. Because rRNA is essential and slow-evolving, its sequence differences accumulate at a usable pace across billions of years. Carl Woese's comparisons of small-subunit rRNA redrew the tree of life into three domains — Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya — making rRNA the standard yardstick of deep phylogeny and of modern microbial identification (16S sequencing).
Where it sits in AP. rRNA's role in translation is Topic 6.4 of AP Unit 6 (Gene Expression and Regulation); the endosymbiosis evidence belongs to Unit 2 (Cell Structure and Function) and the phylogenetic use to Unit 7 (Natural Selection).
