Monohybrid Cross / Krzyżówka jednogenowa

← Unit 5 · Genetics and Biotechnology

English Polski
Definition. A monohybrid cross is a mating analyzed for one gene — typically two heterozygotes crossed with each other (Bb × Bb). It is the basic move of Mendelian genetics and the home of the famous 3:1 ratio. Definicja. Krzyżówka jednogenowa to skrzyżowanie analizowane pod kątem jednego genu — najczęściej dwóch heterozygot ze sobą (Bb × Bb). To podstawowy manewr genetyki mendlowskiej i ojczyzna słynnego stosunku 3:1.
How it works. Work it letter by letter. Parents: Bb × Bb. Each parent's gametes: half B, half b. Combine them in the four-cell Punnett square: BB, Bb, Bb, bb. Genotypes come out 1 BB : 2 Bb : 1 bb; with B dominant, the first three all look alike, so phenotypes come out 3 B-trait : 1 b-trait. Every offspring line is just a probability: each child of Bb × Bb has a ¼ chance of BB, ½ of Bb, ¼ of bb. Jak działa. Rozpisz literka po literce. Rodzice: Bb × Bb. Gamety każdego z rodziców: połowa B, połowa b. Połącz je w czteropolowej szachownicy Punnetta: BB, Bb, Bb, bb.
Example. Mendel's original: cross true-breeding tall (TT) with short (tt) peas — all F₁ are Tt, all tall. Self the F₁ (Tt × Tt) and the F₂ splits ~3 tall : 1 short; Mendel counted 787 : 277. The short trait vanished for a generation and returned — proof that t survived, hidden, inside the tall Tt plants. Przykład. Oryginał Mendla: skrzyżowanie czystej linii grochu wysokiego (TT) z niskim (tt) — całe F₁ to Tt, wszystkie wysokie.
Why it matters. The monohybrid cross is the microscope of classical genetics: from bare offspring counts it reveals dominance, exposes carriers, and tests whether a trait is single-gene at all. Genetic counseling still runs on it — "both parents are carriers" is a monohybrid cross with a 25% affected risk per child. Dlaczego to ważne.
Common mistake. 3:1 is a probability, not a promise — four real children of Bb × Bb parents can easily be 4:0 or 2:2; the ratio emerges over many offspring. And keep the two ratios straight: 1:2:1 is genotypes, 3:1 is phenotypes — quoting 3:1 when asked for genotypes is the classic lost point.

AP Biology deep dive

The cross as hypothesis test. A monohybrid cross encodes three assumptions — one locus, two alleles, complete dominance, fair segregation — and the offspring ratio tests them jointly. Chi-square formalizes it: with Mendel's F₂ (787 tall, 277 short; expected 798:266), χ² ≈ 0.6 at 1 df, comfortably below the 3.84 critical value. Deviations diagnose biology: a 2:1 ratio flags a homozygous-lethal genotype (yellow mice, Manx cats), a 1:1 from a supposed Bb × Bb means a parent was actually bb, and sex-skewed ratios point to X linkage.

Probability rules beat squares. For multi-child questions, the Punnett square only supplies per-child probabilities; the rest is binomial arithmetic — P(exactly 2 affected of 4 children of carriers) = C(4,2)(¼)²(¾)² ≈ 0.21. AP free-response expects the two named rules (multiplication for "and", addition for "or") plus the insight that each birth is independent: previous children change nothing.

Mendel's luck and limits. Mendel's seven traits behaved as clean monohybrids — single loci, full dominance, unlinked (or far-linked) genes; most real traits fail at least one condition, which is why the monohybrid cross is the control experiment of genetics rather than its universal law. The productive reading: when a trait doesn't give 3:1, the deviation itself identifies the extra biology (incomplete dominance → 1:2:1 phenotypes; two genes → 9:3:3:1 and its epistatic distortions).

Where it sits in AP. The monohybrid cross is Topic 5.3 of AP Unit 5 (Heredity), with chi-square analysis a named skill there and in the lab manual's fly and seedling crosses.
