Codominance / Kodominacja

← Unit 5 · Genetics and Biotechnology

English Polski
Definition. Codominance is when a heterozygote shows both alleles' traits fully, side by side — neither allele masks the other, and nothing blends. Definicja.
How it works. Both alleles are switched on and both products actually appear in the phenotype. In blood type AB, the Iᴬ allele puts A-type markers on red blood cells and the Iᴮ allele puts B-type markers on the same cells — the cell wears both badges at once. Codominant alleles are written as different superscripts on one letter (Iᴬ, Iᴮ), not as capital-and-lowercase.
Example. Human ABO blood groups: an Iᴬ Iᴮ person is type AB. Roan cattle: a red-haired parent crossed with a white-haired parent gives a roan calf whose coat is a mixture of fully red and fully white hairs — look closely and each hair is one color or the other, not pink.
Why it matters. Codominance (and its cousin incomplete dominance) shows that Mendel's simple dominant-recessive rule is the special case, not the whole truth. It also runs the most practical genetics you own: blood-type compatibility for transfusions follows directly from codominant Iᴬ and Iᴮ. Dlaczego to ważne.
Common mistake. Codominance is not blending — that is incomplete dominance. Pink snapdragons (red blended toward pink) = incomplete dominance; AB blood or roan coat (both traits present, unblended, side by side) = codominance. Ask: do I see both originals, or something in between?

AP Biology deep dive

Molecular mechanism. The ABO alleles encode a glycosyltransferase: Iᴬ's version attaches N-acetylgalactosamine to the H antigen, Iᴮ's attaches galactose, and the i allele is a frameshift null that attaches nothing. In an Iᴬ Iᴮ cell both enzyme versions are present and each decorates H antigens independently — codominance is simply two functional gene products working in parallel. This is why dominance relationships are emergent biochemistry: A and B are codominant with each other yet both dominant over i.

Dominance depends on the phenotype level. Sickle cell is AP's favorite trap: at the whole-organism level HbA is effectively dominant (heterozygotes are healthy), at the cellular/molecular level the alleles are codominant (both HbA and HbS proteins present, detectable by electrophoresis). Always name the level before assigning a dominance label.

Statistics stay Mendelian. Codominance changes phenotype labels, not segregation math. Iᴬ i × Iᴮ i still gives four equally likely offspring genotypes (Iᴬ Iᴮ, Iᴬ i, Iᴮ i, ii) — one convenient consequence is that heterozygotes are directly countable in a population, which makes allele-frequency estimates exact rather than inferred (unlike with complete dominance, where AA and Aa look alike).

Where it sits in AP. Codominance is core non-Mendelian genetics — Topic 5.4 (with 5.3) of AP Unit 5 (Heredity) — and the hemoglobin example bridges to protein structure in Unit 6 and heterozygote advantage in Unit 7.
