Why Ranked Robin — the friendly upgrade for ranked ballots

For anyone who already loves ranked ballots. Ranked Robin keeps the exact ballot you know — rank the candidates in your honest order — and counts it so the candidate a majority prefers over everyone wins. Same ballot, a count that finds the consensus. This is the positive case; the method page has the mechanics and the honest limits are stated plainly at the end.

The case in eight points

1. Ranked Robin in one sentence

Whoever would win a one-on-one race against each other candidate wins the election. Ranked Robin holds every head-to-head matchup at once — a round-robin tournament — and elects the candidate who beats them all: the consensus winner.

2. You keep the ballot you already believe in

Rank the candidates in your honest order of preference — the same ranked ballot ranked-choice voters already use and love. Nothing to relearn. Ranked Robin is not a different ballot; it's a better way to count the one you already like.

3. The consensus candidate wins

The winner is the one more voters prefer over each rival, one on one — the broadly-acceptable choice a majority is happy with, not just the favorite of the largest faction. In a divided race, that's usually the candidate who can actually represent the whole community.

4. Every ranking you write counts

Ranked Robin reads your whole ballot: every candidate you rank is compared against every other, in every matchup. Your second and third choices are always in play — they never get thrown out, and there's no "my ballot didn't count" surprise. Rank as few or as many as you like.

5. Your favorite never hurts you

Ranking your true favorite first is always safe. Ranked Robin is monotonic — giving a candidate more support can never make them lose — so you're never punished for voting honestly, and you never have to calculate. Vote your heart.

6. Easy to count, and verifiable at the precinct

The count is just pairwise tallies, and they add up precinct by precinct — each polling place can post its own head-to-head numbers on election night, and the totals combine by simple addition. No shipping every ballot to a central computer; the result is transparent and auditable from local tallies.

7. Easy to explain

"The candidate who'd beat each of the others in a one-on-one race wins." Everyone understands a round-robin — it's how sports leagues and chess tournaments crown a champion. No rounds of elimination to follow, no transfers to trace.

8. Honest about what it is — and isn't

Ranked Robin captures your order, not your strength of feeling — it can't tell a squeaker from a landslide. If you want to express how much you prefer someone, a scored ballot like STAR carries more of your voice. And in the rare case of a Condorcet cycle (A beats B beats C beats A, with no one beating everyone), there's no consensus winner and the count falls back on a tiebreak reasonable people can debate. These are real, and small; naming them is part of why the rest is trustworthy.


Where it fits — we're all on the same side

If you love ranked ballots, Ranked Robin is your upgrade: the ballot you know, counted so the consensus candidate wins, tallied transparently at the precinct. Both are aiming at the same thing — an honest ballot and a winner with real majority support — and both are a world beyond Choose-One.

The point was never to run down anyone's favorite reform. It's that the ranked ballot deserves a count worthy of it, and Ranked Robin is one.
